Cancer research gets the go-ahead

2007-02-13

Montreal, February 13, 2007 – The Cancer Research Society and the Guzzo family are proud to announce an extraordinary partnership for the benefit of cancer research. This commitment will finance the creation of a university chair in environment-cancer. Discussions are underway for the chair to be established at the Université de Montréal in the near future.

"Business success cannot be achieved without generosity,” explained Vincenzo Guzzo, executive vice-president and CEO of Cinémas Guzzo. "A business should contribute to the wellbeing of the community that supports it and helps it grow and prosper. Because of this – and because my mother and my father are both cancer survivors – the Guzzo family has decided to get financially involved in research to conquer cancer.”

"Four months after the Cancer Research Society launched the Environment-Cancer Fund, the challenge has been set!” said Mario Chevrette, president of the Cancer Research Society. "With the Guzzo family’s determination, the study of the interrelationships between cancer and our living, working and learning environments will really take off with the creation of the Guzzo Environment-Cancer Research Chair.”

"Cancer has become the No. 1 cause of death in Quebec,” said Dr. Christine Colin, vice-dean of public health at the Université de Montréal. "Our greatest hopes for combating this disease, which is a major source of fear and anxiety for all citizens, are definitely prevention and public health. To effectively prevent cancer, we need to increase our knowledge through research and put that knowledge to work in prevention awareness. That’s what university chairs are for.”

"The goal of creating a research chair in environment-cancer was born of a shared conviction and forward-thinking ideas,” said Mario Chevrette. "With more than 60 years of experience in fundamental research, the Cancer Research society plans to use the Environment-Cancer Fund to expand our field of research by embracing a multidisciplinary, cross-over inter-institution approach.
